Inauguration of the Police Service Commission By President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua

An Address by

His Excellency, President
Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, GCFR

At the Inauguration of the
Police Service Commission

Abuja
15th April 2008

PROTOCOL

1 am especially delighted to welcome you all to the Inauguration of the reconstituted Police Service Commission.

Given the magnitude of the security and development challenges which Nigeria is faced today, the Police Service  Commission has   the  onerous   responsibility of assisting the Federal Government to reposition our Police Force    for    efficient  and effective fulfillment of  its constitutional mandate and full functionality.

Daunting as this task may appear, I am confident that the Collective Synergy and the impressive antecedents of the distinguished Nigerians that constitute the membership of this Commission will ensure a successful prosecution of this national assignment.

Our Administration believes that economic growth and national development can only be sustained in an environment of enduring peace, stability, security, and the prevalence of the rule of Saw. This requires the strengthening of our law enforcement and administration of justice systems. This also underscores the profundity of the task with which the Government and people of Nigeria are charging you today.

While congratulating each and every one of you on your appointment as members of this important Commission, I implore you to fully commit to working and serving diligently to ensure that we bequeath to Nigerians a Police Force that would effectively and efficiently partner with the Federal Government in our quest for national regeneration,

I regret that the seventh member of the Commission, Hajiya Fatima  Abba Kyari Kura is unable to be with us today.

She has passed on at this critical time when her service to the Nation was most required. May her soul rest eternally in the bosom of Almighty Allah. Plans are on to effect a replacement for her as soon as possible.

I assure you of the unequivocal support of the Federal Government  as you embark on the successful prosecution of this very important national assignment. Fortunately, for a working document, you have the report of the Police Reform Committee to which Government has committed to faithful implementation of its recommendations.

Given the high level of diligence with which the Reform Committee prosecuted its mandate, I am sure that you will find the Report a very useful and productive working document. I will like to seize this opportunity to reiterate our gratitude to members of the Police Reform Committee for a job well done.

Distinguished Ladles and Gentlemen, It is now my singular honour and pleasure to formally inaugurate the Police Service Commission to the glory of God and the enduring peace, security, stability, and progress of Nigeria.

Thank you.
