IGP has no power to promote - PSC Chairman
JUST as the controversy surrounding the promotion and demotion of former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, in the Police Force rages on, Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr. Parry Osayande, on retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, has declared that the Inspector-General of Police has no power to promote any policeman.
He said even when he does so for acts of gallantry and or for any other reasons, such policemen who are promoted cannot not wear their new ranks until due process is followed.
Osayande, who was addressing officers and policemen in Bauchi at the weekend in continuation of the PSC's visit to various police formations across the country, said promotion and discipline were the constitutional duty of the commission.
He said those who were "wrongfully promoted" by the Inspector General of Police would have to wait until due process was followed, adding that the PSC was saddled with the responsibility of recruiting all categories of policemen, promotion and discipline of officers and men.
The PSC chairman stated that the commission had observed the discrepancies in the payment of pensioners, adding that following this development, he had directed the Director of Operations to explain why some retired men were not collecting their entitlements.
