Some of the National Daily Newspapers in their publications of Monday, 26th January, 2009 reported an alleged threat by a segment of the Nigeria Police to embark on a strike action over the non-release of promotions of certain cadres of Officers. A strike ultimatum was reportedly issued in this regard.
2. Following its inauguration, the Police Service Commission embarked on certain measures aimed at ensuring that advancement in ranks and progress in the Nigeria Police is based on merit, transparency, established guidelines, and devoid of undue influence. To this end, promotions Officers within the cadres of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) down to Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) were carried out.
3. The alleged delayed promotions which include those raised by the members of the Junior Police Officers is due to the resolve of the Commission to be thorough with the recommendations forwarded to it by the IGP in order to avoid mistakes. With regards to those who sat for the promotion examination conducted by the Administrative staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), the Commission wishes to state that irregularities discovered are being sorted out and the results will soon be released immediately the exercise is completed. In the case of the promotion of Inspectors to ASPs, there were also irregularities which include incomplete submission of annual performance evaluation reports, which affected over 360 officers.
4. The Police Service Commission and the relevant Department in the Police force Headquarters are working hard to clear the outstanding issues. This is in keeping with the avowed commitment of the Commission to ensuring standard, equity and transparency in all its dealings. However, it should be emphasized here that the Police Service Commission will not tolerate any act of indiscipline and insubordination by serving members of the Force in any manner whatsoever.
5. The Police Service Commission hereby reiterates its commitment to re-positioning the Nigeria Police and urges its officers and men to remain committed and abide by the age-long ethics, which has sustained the Force over the years. Members of the Force are further assured of continuous advancement and progress in their career based on merit and established guidelines.
