The Police Service Commission has said it requires an allocation of N420bn annually for five years to implement its reform of the force..
The Chairman of the commission, Mr. Parry Osayande, said this on Wednesday in Kaduna when he visited the state’s Acting Governor, Mr. Patrick Yakowa.
Osayande said the amount would be used in providing adequate logistics, infrastructure and training of policemen to meet international standards.
He said the police needed serious training to re-orientate officers as they were yet to recover from the damage caused by 30 years of military rule.
He said that the police council agreed to raise additional funds through contributions from the three tiers of government.
“Under this arrangement, they will pool resources together to tackle the myriad of problems facing the Nigeria Police Force,” he added.
He said it was the constitutional duty of the commission to recruit, appoint, promote and discipline officers other than the inspector-general of police.
Osayande, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, commended the state government for its assistance to the force.
Responding, Yakowa said the reform was timely and pledged that the state government would assist security agencies in the state as enshrined in its 11-Point Agenda.
The commission is touring all police formations and has so far visited Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta states.
